Why Do Tinctures Taste Horrible??!!

I was walking in the woods behind our house with a few of my sons. (yes...I have enough sons to make that statement). We came across some beautiful, light purple berries and we wondered if they were edible. After consulting The Great Oracle (aka Google) we discovered that they were beauty berries and were in fact edible. Being the adventurous people that we are, we tried the berries. We quickly discovered why you won't find them on grocery store shelves. They taste bad...really, really bad. Which brings us to the point of my little story. Some plants taste bad. That has nothing to do with it's health benefits.


Many tinctures begin with the magnificent flavor of various horrible tasting plants. You can get around the taste by grinding the herbs into a powder and putting them in a capsule. Unfortunately to receive the same dosage as is available in tincture form one would need to take 40ish capsules. Since most people are not looking to replace their diet with a bunch of pills, this really isn't a good option.


Some tinctures are made with water or glycerin. They still have the awful taste of the herbs, but it is a little more tolerable. This processing method does not fully extract the medicine in the herbs. In short, they just aren't as good and still taste bad.


In short, medicine tastes bad. It just does. If you want to get the greatest benefit from natural herbs and roots, "Sometimes you just have to embrace the suck". (that last part is a Kris Paranto quote)
