Kratom (mitragyna speciosa), a tree growing in Southeast Asia, produces leaves that are used for many purposes. Historically, people have consumed the leaves by chewing them or drying them in the sun and grinding them into a fine powder and preparing a tea or tincture.

Currently, people are able to consume the leaves in a capsule form.

Like most other plants, the kratom tree comes in many varieties. Although not scientifically proven, each is said to have its own unique characteristics. The following describes the opinions and experience of many kratom consumers.

The Primary Strains of Kratom

There are three primary strains of kratom that are generally distinguished by processing methodologies. You may see differently named strains of kratom outside of these three varieties, but when carefully reviewed you will find that these descriptions tend to refer to where the leaves were sourced, as opposed to a difference in the intrinsic properties.

White Vein Kratom

When compared to other strains, white kratom carries an acquired taste. Its intensity does make it harder for beginners to appreciate, however it can be rewarding for those who are interested in and have tried other types of kratom.

Features: White vein kratom is harvested while the leaves are young and the veins are white (similarly to how white teas are harvested). The leaves are dried indoors with no light.

Potency: Aside from Maeng Da, white kratom is considered the most potent major kratom strain. Therefore it is generally not ideal for people who are just learning about kratom.

Effects: Said to have a mild stimulant effect people tend to associate it with increased energy and alertness.

Red Vein Kratom

Red vein kratom is one of the most popular strains. It is considered the best strain for supposed sedative effects. People also use it for pain relief or to bring about a feeling of euphoria.

Features: The leaves are processed using sunlight or a UV lamp during the drying process. Sometimes it is fermented during its processing to create bentuangie kratom, a slightly different variation. (more info below).

Potency: Red kratom is considered the most mellow of kratom strains and is not used as a stimulant.

Effects: Red kratom is thought to help the user remain calm through a mild sedative effect. Some people may use red kratom for pain relief, although it has not been approved for this use or as a substitute for any medication.

Green Vein Kratom

The middle road option between the white and red strains, Green vein kratom is said to offer similar stimulant effects to those of white kratom.

Features: The leaves are usually harvested from more mature plants. The drying process of the leaves generally begins indoors, in air conditioned rooms, and is the moved outside for completion.

Potency: Although more subtle than white vein, green kratom is still regarded as a stimulant.

Effects: Green vein kratom can give a mild boost of energy, but it may also give the user better mental clarity to focus on tasks and greater endurance.

Other Types and Varieties of Kratom

There are other varieties of kratom within these three main categories (Red, White and Green) Presenting a variation of one of the main three strains, sometimes a blend of two or more strains will create more subtle differences.

Maeng Da Kratom

Maeng Da was originally grown in Thailand. Growers are now replicating the production elsewhere. It is curated to be a particularly high quality, hence the price increase. It is classified as both a red or white strain due to the blend of characteristics from these major strains. It is thought to provide a boost of energy with a feeling of mental clarity.

Bentuangie Kratom

A variety of red kratom fermented during the drying process, bentuangie is thought to have the same sedative effects as its red parent strain. Consumers of this variety tend to use it to relieve intense pain.

Yellow Vein Kratom

Yellow vein kratom is likely produced when two strains of kratom are mixed. The yellow name refers to this blending of other colored strains of kratom.
