Sadly, I am not 8. Just because of my life...I don't really have good "sleep hygiene". Good "sleep hygiene" looks like this: (not to brag...but I actually grew that beautiful little dude)
For his good-night sleep we make sure he:
Goes to bed and wakes up at the exact same time every day
Absolutely NO backlit devices 1 hour before bed. (And I mean no)
No caffeine or other stimulants past 3:00
Sleep in a cool room
Sleep in a dark room
There are some free apps (like Calm) that are beneficial for some people.
Most of this is not really possible in my life. I work all day...do my "home chores" in the evening, and once the kids are in bed I am usually on a laptop trying to cram some more work in. Although I can sleep in a cool, dark, quiet room going to bed at the same time and avoiding backlit devices just isn't going to happen.
For me to sleep I need some help. I tried taking Ambien, and actually wandered around the yard naked in the middle of the night. We live in the country...so I'm sure nobody saw, but still, it's disturbing and I have no memory of it.
I tried Lunesta, but couldn't seem to sleep it off, and it does something that effects your taste. I had a metallic taste in my mouth for hours.
There have been a few other prescriptions I have tried...some worked...but all had side effects that I just wasn't willing to live with. The homeopathic industry tends to lean towards melatonin. There is even prescription strength melatonin now. But for me, it just didn't do the trick. So, I went back to my herbal textbooks. After extensive research I began making my own blends. I now have a magnificent tincture with ingredients that have evidence based results, and it works with none of the side effects that some of the other sleep meds have.
